Have you ever stopped to think about the purpose of your family?
Looking at families today, their purposes can vary dramatically. For some families, it’s making sure their children go to college and can become independent. Maybe it is providing their loved ones with a life of ease. Some view it as a place for fun and connection. While these ideas aren’t necessarily good or bad, the truth is that there is a greater purpose.
When we look at God’s Word, we discover that the true purpose of family is clear:
Families are God’s institution for passing truth and values from one generation to the next.
In Psalm 78:5-7, God’s vision is spelled out with five generations and beyond identified all for the purpose of each generation knowing God and passing on this great hope and glory. God intended family to be multigenerational so that His word might spread and the world be transformed.
"He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;"
- Psalm 78:5-7
Can you imagine your children, grandchildren, and even your great-grandchildren embracing and passing along your values?
“Families are God’s institution for passing truth and values from one generation to the next.”
This impact would be far-reaching — long after you’re gone. You would have a thriving, multigenerational family rooted in unity, strength, common values, and vision.
All because you chose to prioritize God’s purpose for your family.
Others are chasing after fleeting purposes. But you can begin to pursue God’s purpose for yours today — and build a family legacy that endures from generation to generation.
